RICE
Overviews
More
than half of the worlds population
rely upon rice as their stapel diet,
most live in Asia. Thai people has
been harvesting rice for over a
thousand years, this is reflected in
most of our culture and traditional
ceremonies.
Thai
rice belongs to the variety Indica
long grain. Thailand's naturally
fertile land, strong sun, watered by a
generous rainfall, makes for a
reliable foundation for consistant
harvest, and for export.
Rice
Varieties
In
general, the rice family could
be broken down into three main
categories:
1. Indica
(long grain) - grown in the warm
climate region, such as Thailand,
India, Pakistan, Brazil, and Southern
USA.
2. Japonica
(round grain) - grown in the cold
weather area, such as Japan, Korea,
Northern China and California.
3. Javanica
(medium grain) - only grown in
Indonesia

Thailand's
Rice Production
In
1999, Thailand devoted approximately
60 million rais (6.25 rais = 1
hectare) of land to rice cultivation.
Thailand's total rice production in
1999 could be categorized as follows:

With the global market
share of 23%, Thailand produced
approximately 23 million metric tons
of rice in 1999, 6 million of which
were exported. As the world's number 5
rice producer, following closely
behind Indonesia and Bangladesh,
Thailand exports about 27% of rice
produced domestically. This trend in
rice production is projected to
increase to 24 million metric tons in
the year 2001.
Thailand's
Rice Price
Because
of the fluctuation of prices in the
global rice market, in the next few
years, Thailand's rice price will be
heavily influnced by supplies from
other rice-producing countries. With
increasing competition from other
countries and large supplies produced
domestically, the Thai rice price will
likely fall. According to the
Agricultural Exchanges (Agex.com),
Thailand's export prices for top and
medium grades of regular milled white
rice have droped since mid-July 2000.
Prices for the premium jasmine rice
dropped from usd 570 to usd 553 per
ton.
Thai
Rice Export
Most
of Thailand's rice production is
traded within Asia. According to the
Department of Foreign Trade's
statistical figures, Thailand traded
approximately 37% of its export
value within Asia, in 1999.
Indonesia, Malysia, and Singapore
are the top three Asian importers of
Thai rice, with approximately
1,119,826, 318,697, and 284,406
metric tons respectively.
Africa
is the second largest market for Thai
rice. Approximately 32.5% of the
export value is distributed throughout
the African region, with Nigeria as
the top importer of Thai rice, with
683,880 metric tons. The second and
third African importers are Senegal
and South Africa, with 368,711 and
321,082 metric tons respectively.

The third regional market
for exporting Thai rice is
the Middle East, which
constitutes about 20.5% of
the total export value.
Iran, Iraq, and Dubai, are
the top three Middle Eastern
importers of Thai rice, with
approximately 649,242,
214,983, and 209,756 metric
tons respectively in 1999.
Only
4.74% of Thailand's export
value goes to the American
region. The United States
imports 243,422 metric tons of
Thai rice in 1999. Trailing
behind are Canada and Cuba,
with 55,952 and 10,000 metric
tons respectively.
Europe
and Oceania constitute two
smallest export markets for
Thai rice. Thailand exports
approximately 3.67% and 1.25%
of the total trade values to
Europe and Oceania in 1999
respectively.
The
annual trade values of Thai
rice has inceased 34.7% from
1995 to 1999. While most of
the international trade
belongs to the private sector,
only a fraction of the total
trade volume is for the
government sector.

Based
on Thailand's annual rice
export volume to each region
of the world, the market share
could be derived. In Asia,
where Thailand has its largest
export market share comparing
with other regions, the share
dropped slightly from 49.91%
in 1998 to 37.30% in 1999.
This drop may due to the
increase in regional
competition and the emerging
rice exporter, such as Vietnam
and China. In the African
market, Thai rice has
witnessed an increase in the
market share from 22.90% to
32.55%. A dramatic increase is
also obvious in the Middle
Eastern market, where the
market share almost doubled
from 12.47% in 1998 to 20.50%
in 1999. In the rest of the
regions, Thailand's rice
market share dropped slightly.

Since
1995, the world communities
have increased their demand
for Thai rice. Thailand's
number one export market for
rice is Indonesia, the world's
number one rice importer. Iran
and Nigeria, the world's
second and thrid largest rice
importers, also form
Thailand's major export
markets. In order to further
expand the rice market,
Thailand, beginning in 1999,
built new distribution centers
to increase sales of jasmine
and other types of rice in the
United Arab Emirates, Saudi
Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait,
and Qatar. With this market
expansion into the Middle
Eastern countries, future
statistics should reveal
higher import volumes of Thai
rice by these countries.
White
non-glutinous rice of various
grades contributes the most to
Thailand's trade volume and
value. White glutinous rice of
100% and 5-10% witnessed an
increase in the trade volume,
while the 15-20%, 25-35%, and
40-45% grades faced a dramatic
reduction in both the trade
volume and value from 1998 to
1999.

World
Rice Market Share 1999
on Import & Export
Source:
United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA), 2000.
The
world's top three rice exporters are
Thailand, India, and Vietnam,
respectively. Thailand held on to the
world's highest rice export market
share from the year 1995-1998.
Although at the end of the year 1998,
Thailand's export market share has
declined 4.2% from its original level
in 1995, Thailand is projected to hold
on to the largest market share, at
approximately 26-28% of the world's
rice production. India and Vietnam
traded places in the year 1998, as
India's export market share dropped to
the third place, while Vietnam's
increased to the second place. India's
export production declined from 3.6
million metric tons in the year 1996
to 2.0 million metric tons in the year
1997. The global rice trade is
projected to increase in the year
2000.
